Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated by Hindus all over India and also by the hindus who stay in different counties all over the world, as the birthday of the god of wisdom, knowledge and prosperity. The celebrations continue from five to eleven days, depending upon family traditions. It is believed that praying to Lord Ganesha leads to fulfilment of wishes and desires. Ganesha's blessing removes all the obstacles from life. Although it is not known when this festival was first celebrated, but it is assumed to have been celebrated in Pune initially. Celebrations were started during the rule of Chhatrapati Shivaji to promote nationalism and give a feeling of unity. Ganapati is the son of Lord Shiva and Parvati ; various stories are attached to his birth. This elephant-headed god with Mooshak (rat) as his vehicle was created by Goddess Parvati from the sandalwood dough. It was she who infused life in Ganesha and asked him to guard at the door while she was in her bath. When Lord Shiva returned and was stopped by this unknown child Ganesha, the boy did not recognize him and obstructed his passage. So Shiva chopped off the boy's head and entered. Parvati was shocked when she saw this. She explained to Shiva that the boy was their son and pleaded with Shiva to save him at all costs.
Shiva then instructed his helpers to go and get the head of someone who was sleeping with their head pointing to the north. The helpers then got the head of an elephant, which Shiva affixed to the boy's torso and Ganesha was born!. This re-birth of Ganesha is celebrated as Ganesh Chaturthi, also known as 'Vinayaka Chaturthi' or 'Vinayaka Chavithi'.

Date

The festival is observed in the Hindu calendar month of Bhaadrapada, starting on the shukla chaturthi, the fourth lunar day of the waxing moon fortnight. The date usually falls between August and September. The festival lasts for 10 to 12 days, ending on Anant Chaturdashi.

The size of this idol may vary from sizes 3/4th of an inch to 62 feet.On the day of the festival, it is placed on raised platforms in homes or in elaborately decorated outdoor tents for people to view and pay their homage. The priest/poojari, usually clad in red silk dhoti and shawl, then invokes life into the idol amidst the chanting of mantras. This ritual is called 'pranapratishhtha'. After this the 'shhodashopachara' (16 ways of paying tribute) follows. Coconut, ,21 'durva' (trefoil), 21 'modakas'(rice flour preparation),jaggery  blades and red flowers are offered. The idol is anointed with red unguent or sandal paste (rakta chandan). Throughout the ceremony, Vedic hymns from the Rig Veda and Ganapati Atharva Shirsha Upanishad, and Ganesha stotra from the Narada Purana are chanted.
For 10 days, from Bhadrapad Shudh Chaturthi to the Ananta Chaturdashi, Ganesha is worshipped. On the 11th day, the image is taken through the streets in a procession accompanied with dancing, singing, to be immersed in a river or the sea symbolizing a ritual see-off of the Lord in his journey towards his abode in Kailash while taking away with him the misfortunes of all people.

The whole community comes to worship Ganesha in beautifully done tents. These also serve as the venue for free medical checkup, blood donation camps, charity for the poor, dramatic performances, films, devotional songs, etc. during the days of the festival. All join in this final procession shouting "Ganapathi Bappa Morya, Purchya Varshi Laukariya" i.e. (O father Ganesha, come again early next year). After the final offering of coconuts, flowers and camphor is made, people carry the idol to the river to immerse it which is also called as Ganesh nimajjanam.
